As a midwife, I seek to nurture a woman’s sense of personal strength and self-confidence so that she may experience birth as an empowering process that can be drawn upon throughout her life. I do not “deliver” babies, rather assist and support women and their families to give birth. I believe that birth is a normal life process created by God that works best when allowed to unfold as naturally as possible, only intervening when a need arises. When I attended my first birth in 1984, I wept and was forever transformed by the power and overwhelming beauty of ushering in the miracle of new life. I have found deep joy in actively serving birthing families since. Ten years were spent specifically supporting pregnant minors, both those who chose to parent and those who chose to place their children for adoption. In the 1990’s, I was blessed to birth three beautiful children, two daughters and a son, at home with midwives. As birth changed the way I see myself as a woman and mother, and provided the catalyst to heal past wounds, I desire this for all women. I am licensed as a massage therapist and certified as a placenta encapsulation specialist with I attended the (Midwifery Education Accreditation Council) accredited midwifery school, National Midwifery Institute. I feel honored to have received incredible training through wise and seasoned midwives, and continue my training with the greatest teachers of all: the birthing mamas, their partners and their babies. I have also studied under Dr. Aviva Romm and am a graduate of her Professional Training Program for Integrative and Functional Medicine for Women. I seek optimal health in pregnancy, well-woman care, and future health by uncovering and holistically addressing root causes of symptoms that arise. Each one’s journey is unique, forever broadening my vision and understanding of the birth process. When not attending births, I enjoy family, friends, travel, long beach walks, massage, a good cup of tea, and dark chocolate!

As your midwives, we are on-call and available for you at all times. It is our intention for you to feel held and supported at every step of your care. We provide labor support as early as needed or wanted.
Prenatal appointments occur every 3 weeks and become more frequent as the birth nears. Appointments last an hour or more providing ample opportunity for the assessment of mother and baby’s well being, addressing client questions, education, and relationship building. Two Pre- and Perinatal Psychology sessions are included in the home birth package. These optional sessions help families prepare for their upcoming birth by providing deeper connection for parents, their older children, and their baby in the womb.
Postpartum home visits support breastfeeding and address any concerns about mom or baby. We initiate referral or transfer of care in the prenatal, birth or postpartum period as the need arises. Studies have shown that home births with CPMs are as safe as hospital birth for low risk women, have fewer medical interventions, are less expensive, and women report greater birth satisfaction.
Women who wish to safely labor at home before transfer to either a hospital or birth center may consider Monitrice service (a professional midwife who provides doula services). In addition to usual doula support, a Monitrice is able to perform clinical assessments, such as monitoring the baby’s heart rate, mom’s vital signs, and cervical dilation. Once transferred to the chosen birth setting, clinical assessment will be turned over to the respective staff, and the Monitrice will then switch to doula role, providing emotional support, information and personal connection. Women who use professional labor support at the hospital show significantly greater birth satisfaction, fewer interventions and higher incidence of breastfeeding without difficulty. Both prenatal preparation and postpartum follow-up is included.
Some women choosing to birth at the hospital still desire on-going midwifery care throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Concurrent or customized care is available.
Please see The Evidence for Doulas by Rebecca Dekker (27 Mar 2013).
Well-woman appointments consist of a thorough medical history intake and dietary review, physical exam including blood pressure evaluation, pap smear, vaginal exam, breast exam, STD screening, family planning and labs for women of all ages. Visits are generally two hours in length providing plenty of time to address any lifestyle concerns one may have with sensitivity.
Preconception appointments include all of the above tailored to the needs of those preparing to start or expand their family. Additional emphasis is placed on the emotional and spiritual preparation for birth.

In addition to being a midwife, Ronda is a graduate of Dr. Aviva Romm's Professional Training Program for Functional and Integrative Medicine for Women. She is not a licensed medical doctor, and does not take the place of your primary care physician unless you are pregnant and she is providing your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Her role is to supplement your care by assisting you with information about how to holistically improve general health through diet, lifestyle modification, and use of botanicals. She does not prescribe pharmaceuticals.
Chinese culture has a long history of using placenta as a powerful medicine to be consumed by the mother to aid postpartum recovery. Benefits can include: natural way to balance hormones, replenish depleted iron, lessen postnatal bleeding, increase milk supply, provide added energy, and decrease postpartum depression. Medications administered during labor and cesarean delivery do not necessarily contraindicate placental ingestion.
Encapsulation is a way to preserve the placenta so it can be ingested over time. Some women choose to save part or all of their capsules for menopause. The process utilizes Traditional Chinese (TCM) techniques and takes place in the client’s home. This is not only convenient, it significantly reduces risk of cross contamination and allows clients to monitor every step of the process to ensure the highest standard of sanitation and safety. Birth is much more than bringing the baby to the outside. It was created to be a powerful spiritual journey that shapes individuals, empowers women, creates and strengthens families, and defines society. Intuition should therefore be respected with awe and gently held with utmost love.
peace on earth begins with birth
I still feel such a thrill at remembering my homebirth with Ronda and her team. It was beautiful, peaceful and gentle. My first birth was a little bit stressful, and I found my homebirth to be healing and comforting for me. Ronda’s presence and spirit are a real gift. She is a nurturer and she walks in peace. I really saw the depth of her experience in dealing with some surprises. I was glad to feel so confident in her skill and wisdom. Ronda keeps health and safety primary, but also focuses on keeping a peaceful and joyful environment to help mothers have positive feelings during their birthing experiences. She also gives loving and thorough post-partum care that has been immensely helpful. I made the best decision in choosing Ronda as my midwife.
After a short stint with an OBGYN, I switched over to Ronda for my Well-Woman care. I remember coming home to my husband and raving about how wonderful I felt about my first appointment with her (not the first thing you usually hear about that type of appt.) Once I was pregnant, it was a no-brainer to continue with Ronda for my prenatal care, and my husband came to every single appointment because he enjoyed them so much, too. She cared so tenderly for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of all three of us from start to end. Any anxieties I had I could communicate freely to her, and I always left her office feeling encouraged. We had an amazingly peaceful and powerful birth at home. Despite some excess bleeding after, the swift way she got it under control allowed the three of us to quickly be reunited in bed together. Her post-natal home visits gave us a calm confidence in those first days as new parents and left us with such a positive outlook on all the joy, healing, and growth ahead. We can’t sing her praises enough!
We cannot begin to express our gratitude for Ronda in our lives. Choosing Ronda to be our midwife was one of the best decisions we have ever made, and looking back, there is no one else I would rather have this important role in our lives. We felt deeply supported and encouraged throughout the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. The care and wisdom she is still providing our family is amazing. There have been so many days where my husband and I just delight in the fact that Ronda has been there to support us since the beginning. She has truly transformed how I understand pregnancy and birth. Initially, I had a lot of anxiety and fears about pregnancy and labor, but everytime I met with Ronda, my confidence and assurance grew. She taught me to trust in my body, stay in the present and believe the best way is often the natural way. She has taught me to trust my own intuition and find my own voice in all of the challenging and complex decisions you face when pregnant. I really appreciate that Ronda always wanted me to feel confident and empowered in my decision making. I am also deeply thankful for her focus and attention on diet and nutrition. Because of her holistic approach and wisdom, through her council and expertise, I learned about vitamin deficiencies and other health issues I never knew I had that most doctors would not have looked into. Every herb, oil, supplement and lifestyle suggestion Ronda gave truly worked. Meeting with her also provided genuine emotional support. I do not know anyone with a more calming and peaceful presence, and her calming energy was very helpful during labor. The birth of our son, River, was the most empowering and miraculous experience. My contractions started in the morning, and Ronda came over quickly and stayed hours after River was born. He came pretty fast, and Ronda handled everything with confidence and care. I really appreciated that throughout this whole journey Ronda not only always included my husband, but emphasized how important his role was. This helped equip and empower him to be the best support, partner and father he could be. Ronda was also amazing at checking in and being present even weeks after his birth (and to this day). Her wisdom, insight, and ability to be in the moment has been such a gift to our family. Her patience, kindness and love has helped me grow as a person, woman and mother. Ronda is nothing short of a miraculous human being and I truly believe she was created to do this work.
When I first met Ronda, I was seeking information about a natural childbirth friendly OBGYN in Santa Barbara, and had no intention of having a home birth. After our meeting at Innate Midwifery, I changed my mind and was very excited and comfortable with choosing them for my prenatal, birth, and postnatal care. It was the best decision I could have made. Everything about the care I received exceeded my expectations. I felt so safe and supported throughout the whole process, and was able to have an incredible birthing experience, which was so healing after my previous experience of birth trauma in the hospital setting. Innate Midwifery has my highest recommendation!
My birth experience with Innate Midwifery was both peaceful and rewarding. The extensive prenatal care allowed room for mindful decision making that ultimately brought a sense of confidence and calm when it came time to birth. The team provided more support and compassion than I could have asked for.
The client centered approach helped me to grow and re birth myself along with the birth of our child. The patience and confidence I was able to find in myself through this process has been so rewarding and unexpected. I look forward to developing these new found strengths I did not know I had. For me, the greatest gift was experiencing the transformation birth is capable of bringing.
Ronda gave us all the tools needed to have the birth of our dreams. She educated us throughout the entire pregnancy both in numerous prenatal and postpartum visits and by providing us with literature, nutrition advice, and assigning homework. This made us active and empowered participants as Ronda guided me through the most intimate and sacred experience of my life - birthing my baby. I had complete trust in Ronda and she had the perfect balance of giving guidance when I asked and space when I needed it. There is no greater feeling than giving your baby the best start in life, which begins at birth. I was able to have the birth of my dreams through Ronda, and for this, we are forever grateful.
We are so thankful for all of the love and support. We felt carried as a family throughout our prenatal journey, birth, and postpartum. Although I developed elevated blood pressure and our birth plans had to take some turns, I had a wonderful birthing experience. I am thankful for the countless hours Ronda spent evaluating me and baby physically and emotionally. She informed us of our options, and respected our choices and timing. We are grateful for the thorough and tender care provided.
Whenever my husband and I have shared our birth story, we can’t help but feel so grateful we made the switch to Innate at 20-something weeks. Though the hospital experience with our first child went “fine,” Covid-19 made us rethink how we wanted our second birth experience to be. Ultimately, choosing Ronda and her team to be our midwives was the best decision we could have made. We felt incredibly supported and empowered through every step of our journey, and the level of care from prenatal appointments to the birth to our postnatal visits truly went above and beyond. We cannot say enough great things about working with the team. They are supportive, nurturing and knowledgeable and they made our home birth journey feel like a VIP experience, complete with smoothies, tea and a spotless house ready for us when we woke up the next morning! We are forever grateful they helped us safely welcome our son into this world, and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a home birth.
"Ronda and Moriah saw me and my husband through the longest, hardest, first birth. It was a marathon and I could never have done it without their help. One was putting pressure on my lower back while the other was massaging. They took turns while the other rested. Their commitment, inner calm, and steady experience kept me persevering through 36 hours of the hardest journey of my life. I am so grateful for how they prepared us with great information before and saw us through postpartum with self-care, nursing, and placenta encapsulation. Our beautiful baby girl is 6 years old today, and not a baby anymore at all. They were such an important part of our transformation from a couple to a family and will always hold the most special place in our hearts."
"Very simply put.....Amazing. :) Kind, calm, knowledgeable and experienced. Our first son was born in the hospital, and when we were pregnant with our second son we knew homebirth was the way to go for us. Although we had great support with Ronda as our doula for our first hospital birth, I can't tell you how different this experience was! After our son was born, the midwives cleaned up and made my husband and I lunch....Seriously! When telling my other friends (who have had homebirths) this last fact, they always say....Really? Lucky! :) Thank you!
peace on earth begins with birth
“When I decided to have a home birth I was quite nervous about finding the right midwives to help me through my first pregnancy and birth. I was so thankful and relieved when I met Ronda and Moriah and got to know their tender, strong and intuitive hearts. I felt so heard, taken care of, understood and respected. They shared a beautiful, strong, calming presence that i knew i could trust with this special experience. As my pregnancy progressed it felt as though we became dear friends. When important medical questions came up, before during and after the birth, their knowledge was accurate and well founded making our decisions simple and seamless. I have complete trust in them. They are an amazing team and I cannot wait to have them at my next birth.”
My birth was truly an amazing experience. After 4 hospital births, having a birth at home with such amazing midwives was a dream come true. They approached everything so calmly and naturally, everything just felt so much more relaxed and how it is supposed to be. Birth is such a beautiful experience when allowed to happen the way God designed it to. Not only was my birth so much more peaceful without the continual interruptions of the medical world, I was able to engage in a new way with the birthing process as well as enjoy my baby so much more right after. Their peaceful and calm demeanor, coupled with their experience and knowledge, made me feel so safe and secure, as well as supported and directed when I needed it. It was truly one of the most incredible experiences of my life!

I cannot express the appreciation and respect I have for Ronda. She is the woman you want by your side during birth! Ronda was so full of joy, respect, patience, understanding, care, and helpful information during all our conversations prior to my son’s birth, and she is the reason I was able to give birth naturally during my challenging labor (due to my son’s posterior orientation). She empowered my husband to be such an amazing supportive partner during the birth process, and Ronda’s calm nature, quiet strength, and belief in natural childbirth helped me so much. Ronda is a champion of babies, mothers, and families. I am so grateful for her and that she gets to use her tremendous gifts to bless so many.

"Ronda is one of my favorite people in all the world and I am honored to call her friend. God placed her in my life as a college roommate that began a life-long bond. My daughter, Sofie, was born June 30,1984. Ronda patiently sat by my side from the beginning of labor to the moment Sofie entered the world. I feel honored that this was the first birth Ronda attended and through this momentous occasion she found her calling. She is a wealth of knowledge in so many areas of health and birth but also has over 30 years of experience to back it up. I trust Ronda with my life. You are in for a treat and have chosen well for your birth journey! It's guaranteed to be a memorable, life-changing event through which you will be blessed beyond measure!"
"My experience with Ronda has made me want to have a fourth baby! Are you crazy? Yes, a little bit! Ronda empowered Dan and me to have three natural births. She was our doula for the first two at the hospital and one of our midwives for the third at home. She is gentle, loving, kind, intuitive, brilliant and helpful. Ronda helped me feel like a client, like a woman, and not like a patient. She gave us the tools to be wise, safe, communicative and informed. I adore Ronda and cannot recommend her more highly. I hope that she is around when my sons have their babies!"
Ronda has been with us for two out of our three births starting in 2010 and is currently one of our midwives for our fourth baby, due in 2016. We didn’t realize the importance of having a doula or midwife with our first baby and I have always wished we could go back and redo that birth. With our second and third babies we had Ronda as our doula and delivered in the hospital. Now, with our fourth baby we have Ronda as our midwife and I feel like the luckiest woman ever! For example, at my last appointment with Ronda she made me tea to enjoy while we chatted at her house. We laughed, talked about how all of my family is doing, getting ready for baby #4, and then we listened to baby’s heartbeat and enjoyed moments checking in on baby and me, making sure we were progressing well. Every time I have an appointment with Ronda I am so grateful for at how “at home” I feel. I feel listened to, I never feel rushed, and I feel supported, believed in and empowered – this is such a difference from my previous experience as a patient in the hospital. I feel giddy and grateful that now we get to have her not just as our doula, but as our midwife – she is in it for the long haul with us and we are thoroughly enjoying every minute alongside her. She is a gift to our family and I can not imagine approaching birth without her by our side!

"When we were pregnant with our first child, a friend strongly recommended we have Ronda as our doula. As a newly pregnant young woman, I was nervous about the whole thing, especially natural birth! But Ronda’s reputation spoke for itself, so we decided to meet with her. Since that meeting, Ronda has become one of my best friends, and has been present at all three of my natural hospital births, in 2006, 2008, and in 2011. Each birth was unique and presented its own set of unforeseen challenges. The first was remarkably long – 40 hours! The second, frighteningly fast moving, and the third – though not especially long, the most challenging of the three. In each situation, in every moment, Ronda was calm, loving, wise and discerning. She knew how to encourage my sweet husband, how to encourage me to try something new; she knew when to be quiet and when to speak up, when to challenge my endurance and when to comfort me. I cannot imagine these precious and vulnerable days without her; I surely would have crumpled under fear and fatigue and weakness. These birth days of my children are precious, largely because Ronda was there, empowering me to be the best birthing mother I could be, and thereby preparing me for the parenting ahead."

"Our fourth baby, Lucas was born in 2016, in our home in Costa Rica. All our babies had been "home births" but none had been born in OUR home. We live in a rural area over two hours away from where most midwives practice. Living so far and having pretty quick births, we had to move to the city two weeks before my due date to insure my arrival for birth. We had always dreamed of being able to stay in our own home. Fortunately, Ronda agreed to come all the way to Costa Rica to be with us as we waited. Our three previous home births had all been different, perfect, and beautiful, but I still felt I had been disconnected from the process and dreamed of catching my own baby. My husband and I talked about this option with Ronda, who was excited about the idea. At ten days postdates I decided to use herbs to see if we could get things going. I love that everyone on my birth team waited patiently and never pressured me in anyway to make this decision. When labor was active, we called Ronda who was staying nearby. I barely noticed when Ronda arrived, she was so non-invasive. She assisted my husband and I to receive baby Lucas into this world 40 minutes later. It was the birth I had dreamed and prayed for! I had great postpartum recovery because of the care I received during his birth and in the days after. Ronda prepared our placenta and I found it very stabilizing. Ronda is very professional but also very nurturing making her a perfectly balanced midwife. She brings a sense of confident calm to the process of pregnancy, birth and postpartum and we feel so blessed she could be part of Lucas' birth story."
